Our Cottage Garden Chickens
We sell free range "woodland" eggs from our own chickens which can be seen at the bottom of the garden. Our first batch of 25 hens were given to us by a local free range chicken farmer. These chickens were beyond their usual commercial life as free range hens and the farmer was glad to see them continue in productive retirement at Sillycotts Cottage. However, due to high demand for eggs we expanded to 50 and now up to 75 hens. Further expansion is being considered. We consider our eggs to be "woodland" in addition to free range as the chickens are free to roam during the day among trees which we believe closely mimics the chickens natural habitat. Happy hens make for good eggs! The breed of chicken is Isa brown. They are friendly hens and very good egg producers.
The McDermott Family's youngest daughter has named many of the chickens, "Beauty", "Lucky" (the 25th out of 24 hens lucky to be donated to us at at the end of their commercial life), Kylie, VB and Dr Evil (among others). Many of the eggs are double yolked and being genuine wooland hens the flavour of the eggs is excellent and you can assure yourself of the hens welfare- we encourage visitors to go down the garden and have a look at our hens nd see how they live.
